India Energy Landscape
India stands as a significant player in the global energy landscape, ranking as the country with the third largest consumption and production. While there is still heavy dependance on conventional energy resources, the country is working towards expanding its usage of renewable energy sources to meet its growing demand.
Coal remains the dominant energy source in India, accounting for ~55% of the country's energy mix. This heavy reliance on coal has positioned India as the world's second-largest coal consumer. Oil and petroleum products come in next. India is the third largest oil importer globally, with imports accounting for ~80% of the nation's oil needs. This high level of import dependence poses significant energy security concerns. Natural gas contributes a smaller but growing portion to the energy mix, accounting for about 6% of the total.
Renewable energy has emerged as a rapidly expanding sector in India's energy landscape. As of 2023, the country boasts an installed renewable capacity exceeding 150 GW. Solar energy leads this green revolution with ~63 GW of installed capacity, followed by hydropower at ~46GW and wind power at ~42 GW. Nuclear energy, while a smaller component of India's energy mix, plays a strategic role in the country's long-term energy planning. It contributes about 3% to the electricity mix, with an installed capacity of ~7 GW.
The electricity sector in India has seen significant growth, with total installed capacity surpassing 400 GW as of 2023. Despite this progress, per capita electricity consumption remains relatively low at about 1,327 kWh per year (2023), indicating significant room for growth and improved access to electricity, particularly in rural areas.
Insights in Africa’s Energy Sector
Africa’s energy sector is both a developmental challenge and promising opportunity. The continent boasts a diverse energy landscape and is trying to further expand into renewable energy sources for sustainable development and growth. The sector presents a complex yet compelling landscape for entrepreneurs, investors and other stakeholders. The continent has a total installed electricity generation of over 245 GW, representing an increase of about 50% since 2015. South Africa accounts for a significant portion of this capacity, reflecting a disparity in the infrastructure development between various countries within the continent. Countries like Nigeria, Egypt, and Algeria also maintain substantial energy infrastructure driven by their oil and gas reserves.
The continent is blessed with a plethora of energy systems, and its solar, wind, hydro and geothermal resources are gaining traction. Morocco is effectively leveraging its solar energy with the Noor-Ouarzazate complex, which is one of the largest concentrated solar power plants globally.
Kenya is similarly making strides in geothermal energy, leveraging the Rift Valley's geothermal resources, while Ethiopia boasts of the continent's largest hydropower project with the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
Despite the impressive progress being made in ensuring access to energy with population coverage increasing from 42% to 56 % over the past 7 years, almost 600 million people in Africa lack access to electricity, representing three-quarter of the world's unserved population. . This access gap underscores the need for targeted investments in infrastructure and innovative solutions. Countries like Rwanda have implemented off-grid solar initiatives, significantly improving energy access in remote communities.
Investments in Africa's energy sector are gaining momentum, with renewable energy projects attracting substantial funding. Over the past 10 years, Africa received over $345.76 billion in both public and private energy finance from G20 countries, Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and Venture Capital (VCs). This trend signals growing investor confidence in Africa's renewable energy potential and commitment to achieving sustainable development goals.
Looking ahead, Africa's energy demand is expected to double by 2040, driven by urbanization, population growth, and industrialization. This growth trajectory underscores the strategic imperative for stakeholders to embrace technological innovations, such as smart grid technologies and decentralized energy solutions, to optimize energy management, improve reliability, and meet evolving consumer needs.

The country has a population of approximately 60 million people with Pretoria serving as the administrative capital and Johannesburg standing as the largest city and the economic powerhouse.
South Africa's economy is the second largest in Africa, driven by mining, manufacturing, agriculture, and services. The country is a major producer of minerals such as platinum, gold, and diamonds, which contribute significantly to its GDP and exports. Agriculture also plays an important role, with South Africa being a leading producer of fruits, wine, maize, and sugarcane. Johannesburg is often referred to as the economic hub of Africa due to its thriving financial, industrial, and commercial activities. The country is also a center of technological innovation and home to a growing number of tech startups. South Africa is expanding its renewable energy sector, leveraging solar and wind projects like Jasper Solar Energy and Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm to diversify its energy mix away from coal.

- South Africa Reveals Plans to Explore Nuclear Energy
South Africa's Minister of Electricity and Energy has unveiled plans to address persistent electricity issues through the development of nuclear plant capacity for electricity generation. The strategy, which includes a proposed 2.5 GW nuclear power plant, aims to stabilize the country’s energy supply, diversify energy sources for long-term stability, and follow a recent 100-day period without load-shedding. Significant upgrades are underway at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to extend its operational life beyond 2024.

- Dangote Group is set to sell shares of its refinery and fertilizer companies by Q1 2025
Aliko Dangote has announced that his fertilizer and petrochemical divisions will be listed on the stock exchange by Q1 2025. The $20.5 billion refinery and $2.5 billion fertilizer plant aim to enhance transparency and broaden investment opportunities. The refinery, with a 650,000 barrels per day capacity, is expected to generate $25 billion annually from 2025. Dangote emphasized the move is aimed at expanding the investor base and unlocking additional value for shareholders whilst also significantly reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products as well the fertilizer plant is set to revolutionize agriculture across Africa by providing affordable and readily available fertilizers.
